this is the FIFTH yr of me doing a brusque story advent calendar as my december project. for those of you new to me or this endeavor, here'southward the skinny: every day in dec, i will be reading a short story that is one) available gratuitous somewhere on cyberspace, and two) listed on goodreads as its ain detached entity. there volition exist links provided for those of y'all who similar to read (or listen to) short stories for gratuitous, and also for those of you who have wildly overestimated how many books you can read in a yr and are freaking out most not coming together your 2020 reading-challenge goals. i take been gathering links all year when tasty little tales have popped into my feed, simply i will also accept additional suggestions, as long as they meet my aforementioned 1), 2) standards, because i have not compiled as many as usual this year.

IN ADDITION, this may be the last twelvemonth i do this project since GR has already deleted the pages for several of the stories i've read in previous years without warning, leaving me with a bunch of missing reviews and broken links, which makes me experience shitty. considering i don't have a lot of time to waste, i'1000 not going to bother writing much in the mode of reviews for these, in instance gr decides to flake 'em again. 2020 has left me utterly wrung out and i apologize for what's left of me. i am doing my all-time.

DECEMBER 13: IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, Try AGAIN - ZEN CHO

this 1 grew into 5 stars for me. information technology didn't start out that style—in the beginning, i was getting kinda bored and bogged downwards in the folktaliness of it; the story of an imugi studying the Manner in club to arise and become a dragon &yadda. but that all inverse when i got to this part here:

Byam turned for its last look at the earth as an imugi. The lake shone in the dominicus. It had been cold, and miserable, and lonely, full of venomous water snakes that bit Byam's tail. Byam had been dying to become abroad from it.

But at present, it felt a great of amore. When information technology returned as a dragon, it would bless the lake. Fish would overflow its banks. The cows and pigs and goats would multiply across counting. The crops would spring out of the world in their multitudes…

A thin screechy noise was coming from the lake. When Byam squinted, it saw a group of picayune creatures on the western bank. Humans.

One of them was shaking a fist at the sky. "Fuck you, imugi!"

"Oh shit," said Byam.

one time the story took on a more...gimmicky tone, i absolutely loved it. to this imugi, i say: Aforementioned—getting mired in frustration over not achieving one's goals, beingness thwarted past fate and happenstance despite prolonged efforts, hard work, ingenuity of approach, feeling foolish for having dreams, for wanting more, condign accustomed to failure, accepting i's lot, resigned to making a life smaller than you'd hoped and finding happiness in this smaller life while nonetheless experiencing twinges of thwarted ambition—it is all very relatable.

"Sometimes," information technology said, "you try really hard and it's not plenty. You lot put in all yous've got and you still never get where you thought you were meant to exist...It hurts. Knowing it wasn't enough, even when you gave information technology the best of yourself. Merely you become over information technology."

it's a crappy hand, knowing you accept the potential to be a dragon merely no matter how difficult you endeavor to punch through, people don't come across you for what you are—or what you're trying so difficult to become—and you end upwards stuck in the life of a goddamn worm.

apparently at that place was a sequel to this story: Head of a Snake, Tail of a Dragon, which was bachelor to read on the author'southward site until concluding may, and yet SOMEHOW the gr scrubbers oasis't deleted its page even though they have deleted Nine of my advent-stories, merely that's but FINE. i missed it by months, only considering it was available for two years, i only have myself to blame for not getting to information technology sooner. the story will get available once again, in a collection the author volition be self-publishing, and as someone who does a lot of work for gratuitous—a situation which gives me a lot of the same feelings as byam the imugi—trying and trying and getting nowhere, and feeling like a failure—i get her decision because not getting paid for work, especially creative piece of work, really sucks.

deplorable. seems i'1000 in a MOOD tonight.

this is a beautiful fairytale about preservation and dreams, starting in ancient times and moving all the manner into our modern age. i was pleasantly surprised by this, non expecting from the way it started off to meet selfies and hashtags eventually play a role in the narrative.

it's a very charming tale, and byam's commentary on human order is oftentimes hilarious. there is such tragedy and fearfulness of failure hidden in its character that it made me Emotional™ to the point where i shed a lonely tear when this novelette came to its end.

besides, i'm a sucker for mythical creature + human relationships. and particularly for a brusque story, this (queer) relationship had plenty warmth, depth, and fun to appeal to me in every way.

The underlining in the excerpts is mine:

Only the eastern side was still reserved to beasts and spirits. There was plenty of space for an imugi to take off.

The mountains around the lake said hello to Byam.

(It was always safer to be polite to an imugi, since you never knew when it might turn into a dragon.) The sky to a higher place them was a pure light blue, dotted with clouds like white jade.

Byam'south heart rose. Information technology launched itself into the air, the dominicus warm on its back.

***

For the start half-millennium or so, Byam could be confident of finding the confinement necessary for report. But more than recently, there seemed to be more and more humans everywhere.

Humans weren't all bad. You couldn't meditate your fashion through every doctrinal puzzle, and that was where monks proved useful.

Of class, even the most enlightened monk was wont to be alarmed by the sudden advent of a giant snake wanting to know what they thought of the Sage'south comments on water. Still, you could usually extract some guidance from them, once they stopped screaming.

Image result for imugi

A herd of cows was grazing by the bank, equally though they were waiting for Byam.

It merely intended to eat 1 moo-cow. It wanted to go on sharp for its ascension.

Dragons probably didn't swallow much. All the dragons Byam had ever seen were svelte, with perfect scales, shining talons, silky beards.

Unfortunately Byam wasn't a dragon yet. It was hungry, and the cows smelled so expert. Byam had one, and then another, and then a third, telling itself each time that this cow would exist the last. Before it knew information technology, virtually the whole herd was gone.

***

Only you had to go out of the water in gild to ascend.

It was impossible to exclude the possibility of being seen past humans, even in the middle of the ocean. Information technology didn't seem to bother them that they couldn't breathe underwater; they still launched themselves onto the waves on rickety assemblages of dismembered trees. It was as if they couldn't wait to become on to their next lives.

Image result for imugi

Information technology hadn't helped back then that the lake humans had named Byam for what information technology was: no dragon, merely an imugi, a degraded beingness no amend than the crawling beasts of the globe.

Only if, as Byam flashed across the sky, a witness saw a dragon… that was another matter. Heaven wasn't immune to the pressures of public perception. Information technology would have to recognise Byam and so.

The spirits of the wind and water were too hard to bluff; fish were too cocky-absorbed; and in that location was no hope of hoodwinking the bounding main dragons. But

humans had bad eyesight, and a tendency to see things that weren't there. Their capacity for self-charade was Byam'due south best bet.

***

Sometimes Byam felt like giving up.

How could it make a dragon when it didn't fifty-fifty know how to be one?

To conquer self-uncertainty, it chanted the aphorisms of the wise:

Nobody becomes a dragon overnight.

Real dragons continue going.

A dragon is only an imugi that didn't give up.

***

But there were consolations available to imugi who reconciled themselves to their fate. Like revenge.

Image result for imugi

But you couldn't report something for iii,000 years without becoming interested in information technology for its ain sake.

"Tell me near your inquiry," said Byam.

"What you said just now," said the monk. "Did yous not – "

Byam showed its teeth.

"My research!" said the monk. "Let me tell you about it."

***

"It'south impressive," she said. "That yous're so open up to learning new things.

If I were a celestial fairy, at that place's no way I'd work so difficult. I'd just lie around getting drunk and eating peaches all twenty-four hour period."

"You have a skewed image of the life of a celestial fairy," said Byam.

Image result for imugi

Byam bethought itself of the other creature that was important in their lives.

"Did y'all tell the cat? Is that why it doesn't like me?"

"I've told you, I can't actually talk to the cat," said Leslie. (Which was a blatant lie, because she did it all the time, though it was true they had strange conversations, generally at cantankerous-purposes.)

***

Before, Byam had e'er thought that humans must be used to dying, since they did it all the time. Just now it had got to know them better, it saw they had no idea how to deal with it.

This was unfortunate, because Byam didn't know either.

***

"Am I non good enough as I am?"

"Of course you're practiced enough [...]. If you're happy, then that's fine. Merely you should know you tin can be anything yous want to be. That's all.

I don't want you to let fear agree yous dorsum."

It was a beautiful petty story nearly perseverance and how life often isn't fair - a concept invented by humans, ironically enough. Nevertheless, giving up shouldn't be an option and wasn't for our protagonist. The story is also nearly finding out who you are, not just what.

Moreover, at that place is a constant slightly humorous undertone that the author uses to flesh out this mythologically themed story with such unlikely elements as public stance / judgment, tutoring (both in academia every bit well as selfworth) and sexuality.

It was a cute little story that I enjoyed quite a lot (though it wasn't equally good equally its competition).

Byam spends so very long studying the Way and trying to impress so that she can exist transformed into a beautiful dragon from her current snake form. There are many almost misses (and several monks frightened and cows eaten) simply no dragonhood. And so, Byam meets a immature woman and ends up falling in love.
I loved this lilliputian tale. There's enough of sense of humor, and a beautiful picayune love story between Byam and Leslie. (view spoiler)[And I admittedly LOVED that only through living a life with Leslie and learning to love others, did Byam actually end upwardly learning the Way and getting to her higher state, as described in the tiny curt I Terminal Time closing out Byam's story. "Y'all have thousands of years," said Leslie. "You lot shouldn't just give up." She looked Byam in the middle. "Don't you still desire to exist a dragon?"

Beautiful and creative.

I really liked this little brusk story.

The first couple attempts Byam makes at ascension are a bit humorous simply as the niggling Imugi continues to neglect and her spirit gets browbeaten downward, the story takes a quieter plow. It's a thoughtful slice with a nice little bulletin about life, love, dreams, and failure, letting people's words keep you down and how they tin raise you back up- peculiarly when it'south someone who is important to y'all. Very nice.

This was such a squeamish and comforting read. It divulges a simple tale yet manages to reinforce this adage beautifully.

What follows is unexpected, foreign, sugariness, and in the end, completely satisfying.

Excellent. Based on Korean mythology, Cho draws the reader into the mind of an aspiring imugi. Aspiring to be what? That's the story.
